Cash Drawers for Shops in Oman: Types, Connections and Sizes

· Sahil Al Seeb

Choosing the right cash drawer for a shop in Oman looks simple until the new drawer will not open from the POS, the notes do not fit, or the lock breaks after a few months. Cash is still part of daily trade in many groceries, cafeterias, pharmacies and spare-parts shops from Muscat and Seeb to Sohar and Salalah. A drawer that matches your POS, your counter and your daily cash volume saves time at every sale and helps keep the money safe. This guide explains the main types, how drawers connect, which sizes suit which counters, and what to check before you buy.

What a POS cash drawer does

A POS cash drawer is a lockable steel box with a tray for notes and coins. In a modern setup, it opens automatically when the cashier completes a cash sale, and stays closed the rest of the time. This simple control matters: when the drawer can only open through a sale or an authorised "no sale" action, every opening is recorded in the POS software, and the end-of-day cash count can be matched against the system.

That is why we recommend using the drawer together with POS software such as iMPOS for retail or Riyalo RestoPOS for restaurants and cafés, where cashier shifts, cash in and cash out are tracked for each user.

How cash drawers connect to the POS

The connection is the most common source of problems, so check it first.

  • Printer-driven (RJ11/RJ12): the most common type. The drawer plugs into the "DK" or drawer port on the back of the receipt printer. When the POS prints a cash receipt, the printer sends a pulse that opens the drawer. No extra driver is needed on the computer.
  • USB drawers: connect directly to the PC or POS terminal. Useful when the printer has no drawer port, but the POS software must support the drawer's USB driver.
  • Serial (RS232): found on older systems. Still used in some installations, but less common today.
  • Manual or push-open: opens with a key or button only. Low cost, but there is no record of each opening.

Most printer-driven drawers are built for a 24V signal, which matches the majority of thermal receipt printers. Some models use 12V. Always confirm that the drawer voltage and the printer's drawer port match before buying; a mismatch can mean the drawer does not open or the solenoid wears out quickly.

Choosing the right size and layout

Drawers come in a few common sizes. The right one depends on your counter space and how much cash you handle.

TypeTypical useNotes
Compact (around 33 cm wide)Small cafeterias, kiosks, salonsFits narrow counters; fewer compartments
Standard (around 40–41 cm wide)Groceries, pharmacies, retail shopsThe most common choice; usually 4–5 note and 5–8 coin slots
Heavy dutySupermarkets, busy restaurantsStronger slides and steel body for hundreds of openings a day
Flip-top / verticalVery small counters, tablet POSOpens upwards; saves depth on the counter

For Omani currency, check that the note compartments are wide enough for the larger rial notes and that the coin cups suit baisa coins. A removable tray is helpful if you lock the cash away at night or change trays between shifts.

Security and durability features to look for

  • Three-position key lock: locked, open on signal only, and fully open. This lets the manager lock the drawer completely when the shop closes.
  • Media slot: a slot at the front for cheques, card slips or large notes without opening the drawer.
  • Steel construction and ball-bearing slides: important for busy counters where the drawer opens many times an hour.
  • Drawer-open sensor: some drawers report to the POS whether the drawer is still open, so the software can warn the cashier.
  • Mounting: under-counter brackets keep the drawer stable and harder to remove.

Setup tips for a smooth checkout

A drawer that works well on day one is mostly about correct installation:

  • Place the drawer directly under or next to the receipt printer so the cable is short and not under strain.
  • Set the POS to open the drawer only on cash payments, not on card or credit sales.
  • Give each cashier their own login so every "no sale" opening is tied to a person.
  • Do a quick cash count at each shift change and compare it to the POS shift report.
  • Keep a spare key in a safe place; lost keys are a common reason for service calls.

Our team installs complete counters across Muscat, including the POS terminal, receipt printer, barcode scanner and cash drawer, and tests the full sale process before handing over. You can see the drawers we stock, such as the EasyPOS heavy-duty cash drawer with bell and the Hanasis 410 cash drawer, in our online shop.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my cash drawer not open when I print a receipt?

The most common reasons are a cable in the wrong port, a voltage mismatch between printer and drawer, the drawer lock set to the fully locked position, or the "open drawer" setting turned off in the printer driver or POS software.

Can I use a cash drawer with an Android or tablet POS?

Yes. Many Android POS terminals have a built-in printer with a drawer port, or the drawer can be connected through a compatible printer. Check that the POS app supports the drawer-kick command before buying.

Which is better, a printer-driven or a USB cash drawer?

For most shops, a printer-driven drawer is simpler and more reliable because it needs no driver on the PC. A USB drawer makes sense when your printer has no drawer port or is placed far from the counter.
