A good laundry POS software in Oman does much more than print a bill. For a laundry or dry-cleaning shop in Muscat, Seeb or Sohar, it is the system that remembers which shirt belongs to which customer, when the order is promised, whether it has been paid, and which items are still on the rack. When that information lives in a notebook or on paper slips, garments go missing, customers wait at the counter, and the owner has no clear view of daily takings. This guide explains what to look for and how to set up a laundry counter that runs smoothly.
Why laundries need a different kind of POS
A supermarket sells an item and the transaction is finished. A laundry is different: every order is received today, processed over one or more days, and handed back later. The POS has to follow each order through its full life. That means the system must handle:
- Items, not just amounts – a single order can contain five shirts, two dishdashas, a blanket and a suit, each with its own price and service.
- Several services per item – wash and iron, iron only, dry clean, express service, or stain treatment.
- Promised delivery dates – normal and urgent orders need different due dates, and staff need to see what is due today.
- Partial payments – some customers pay in advance, some on collection, and corporate clients often pay monthly.
- Order status – received, in process, ready, delivered.
General retail software can be bent to do some of this, but a POS set up around the laundry workflow saves time at the counter every single day.
Garment tagging and order tracking
The most common complaint in any laundry is a lost or mixed-up garment. The fix is simple: every item gets a tag linked to the order number the moment it is received. Many shops print a small barcode tag or sticker for each item with a desktop barcode label printer, while the customer receives a printed receipt listing every item and the due date from a thermal receipt printer.
When the order is ready, staff scan or search the order number and the system shows exactly how many pieces should be in the bag. At collection, the counter can check that the count matches before the customer leaves. This one habit removes most disputes about missing items.
Price lists that staff can follow
Set up a clear price list for each item and service, including express charges. Staff then choose from the list instead of typing prices, so every branch charges the same amount and discounts are recorded properly.
WhatsApp alerts and customer history
Most customers in Oman prefer WhatsApp over phone calls. A laundry system connected to WhatsApp can send a short message when an order is received and another when it is ready for pickup, including the balance due. This reduces calls to the shop and brings customers back sooner, which frees rack space.
Customer history is just as useful. When a regular customer from Ghubrah or Ruwi calls, staff can see past orders, preferences such as "no starch" or "fold, do not hang", and any outstanding balance. If you want to go further, our digital and business automation team can connect reminders and pickup requests to your system.
Payments, credit accounts and Oman VAT
Laundries in Oman handle cash, card and bank transfers, and many serve hotels, clinics, restaurants or companies on monthly credit. Your POS should keep a running balance for each account customer and produce a clear statement at the end of the month.
VAT matters too. Oman applies VAT at a standard rate of 5%, and businesses must register once their taxable supplies pass the mandatory threshold of OMR 38,500 over 12 months. If your laundry is registered, every invoice must show the correct VAT details. A POS that calculates VAT automatically and keeps proper records makes VAT returns much easier. For growing businesses with several branches, linking the counter to Riyalo ERP brings sales, expenses, purchases of detergents and supplies, and staff costs into one set of accounts, and helps you prepare for Oman's move to e-invoicing.
Reports every laundry owner should check
Good software turns daily activity into simple numbers. The reports that matter most for a laundry are:
- Daily sales and collections, split by cash, card and credit.
- Orders due today and overdue orders still on the rack.
- Uncollected orders older than a set number of days.
- Outstanding balances for corporate and hotel accounts.
- Most popular services and items, to guide pricing.
- Branch comparison, if you run shops in more than one area such as Seeb and Barka.
Checking these every morning takes a few minutes and shows problems before they cost money.
Hardware for a laundry counter
A typical laundry counter needs only a few pieces of equipment:
- A POS terminal or touchscreen PC running the software.
- A thermal receipt printer for customer receipts.
- A barcode label printer for garment tags.
- A barcode scanner to find orders quickly at collection.
- A cash drawer and, ideally, a small UPS to protect against power cuts.
Choose equipment that is easy to service locally. Our iMPOS POS system and the POS hardware in our shop are supported by our own team in Muscat.
Frequently asked questions
Can one system handle both laundry and dry cleaning?
Yes. Each item can be assigned a service such as wash and iron, iron only or dry clean, with its own price and processing time, all within the same order.
Do I need special tags for garments?
Not necessarily. Many shops print barcode stickers or tags on a standard label printer. The key is that each tag carries the order number so every item can be matched to its customer.
Can I manage more than one branch?
Yes. With a cloud-connected setup, the owner can see sales, orders and balances for every branch from one place, even when away from the shop.
