Choosing salon POS software in Oman is different from choosing a POS for a grocery or a café. A ladies' salon in Al Khuwair, a barber shop in Seeb or a spa in Ruwi sells time and skill, not only products. The system has to handle appointments, know which stylist did which service, calculate commission, sell packages and still print a clean, VAT-ready bill at the end. This guide explains what to look for so you can compare systems with a clear checklist.
Why a normal shop POS is not enough for a salon
A retail POS is built around barcodes and stock. In a salon, most of what you sell is a service: a haircut, colouring, threading, a facial, a manicure, a massage. Each service has a duration, a price that may change by stylist or hair length, and a staff member attached to it. If your system cannot record who performed the service, you end up working out commission in a notebook at the end of the month, which leads to mistakes and disputes.
Salons also sell retail products such as shampoo, serums and hair colour, and use the same items at the back as consumables. A good salon system keeps these two uses apart so your stock figures make sense.
Key features to look for in salon POS software
- Appointment calendar: a day and week view per stylist, so the front desk sees free slots at a glance and avoids double booking.
- Walk-in and booked customers in one queue: busy weekends in Muscat mean many walk-ins; the system should handle both without confusion.
- Service menu with durations and prices: including different prices for senior and junior stylists if you use them.
- Staff commission: by service, by percentage or a fixed amount, with a monthly report per employee.
- Packages and memberships: for example a bundle of sessions paid in advance, with the balance tracked automatically.
- Customer history: past services, colour formulas used and notes, so any stylist can repeat a look.
- Retail and consumable stock: separate tracking for products sold to customers and products used in services.
- Bilingual bills: English and Arabic receipts that show VAT correctly.
Appointments, reminders and WhatsApp
No-shows cost a salon money because the chair stays empty. Most customers in Oman already talk to their salon on WhatsApp, so it makes sense to send booking confirmations and reminders there. With business automation, a reminder can go out the day before, and the customer can confirm or ask to move the slot. This saves the front desk many phone calls and keeps the calendar accurate.
If you also want customers to book online, check whether the system can show only the services and stylists you choose, and block slots during prayer times or staff breaks.
Staff commission and payroll
Commission is often the most sensitive topic in a salon. The fairest approach is to let the POS record the staff member on every line of the bill, then produce a commission report that staff can check. Look for:
- Commission rules per service or per category
- Separate rules for retail product sales
- Handling of discounts, so commission is calculated on the amount actually paid
- Export to payroll or to an accounting system such as Riyalo ERP
When commission flows into payroll automatically, the end-of-month closing takes minutes instead of a full day.
VAT, bills and e-invoicing readiness
Oman applies VAT at a standard rate of 5%, and VAT-registered salons must issue proper tax invoices. Your system should show the VAT amount clearly, number invoices in sequence and keep records you can hand to your accountant. The Oman Tax Authority is also introducing e-invoicing in phases, so it is sensible to choose software from a provider that is preparing for it rather than a system that cannot be updated.
Hardware for a salon front desk
A salon front desk does not need a large setup. A typical counter includes:
- A touchscreen POS or tablet, such as the iMin Falcon 1 tablet POS, which fits a small reception
- A compact receipt printer, for example the Epson TM-m30III
- A cash drawer and a card payment terminal from your bank
- A barcode scanner if you sell many retail products
You can browse more devices in our shop. For salons with several branches, for example in Muscat and Sohar, a cloud setup lets the owner see sales and bookings for every branch from a phone.
Frequently asked questions
Can one system handle both the ladies' section and the gents' section?
Yes. Most salon systems let you set up separate service menus, staff lists and reports while keeping one customer database and one set of accounts.
Do I need internet for salon POS software?
Cloud systems need a stable connection for bookings and reports, but many can keep billing during a short outage. Ask your provider how the system behaves offline before you buy.
How long does it take to set up a salon POS?
For a single salon, entering services, staff and products and training the front desk usually takes a few days. Having your service price list ready in advance speeds this up.
